Over time, our skin has more and more demands. She will not be satisfied with the first cosmetic. Women aged 40-50 often say that cosmetics simply do not work.
- Why is this happening?
- How to meet the specific needs of mature skin?
- What changes in the functioning of the skin after the age of forty?
- What to pay attention to in the care of mature skin?
- How to differentiate morning and evening care in order to properly respond to the needs of the skin and be satisfied with the effects?
How does the function of the skin change with age?
Skin aging is a very complicated process, depending on both internal (endogenous) and external (exogenous) factors. We have an influence on certain matters such as a healthy lifestyle, diet, and the amount of sleep. However, "programmed" biological mechanisms are completely independent of us.
The skin begins to age around the age of 25-30 when the production of collagen slows down. However, between the ages of 40 and 50, there is a clear acceleration of this process. We get the impression that now everything is happening faster than ever. Hormones are largely responsible for this.
Hormones and skin aging
The level of female sex hormones is closely related to the condition of our skin. Estrogen is responsible for the proper hydration of the skin, its elasticity, and the stimulation of collagen and elastin fibers. Collagen and elastin are the "support" proteins of our skin. Their degradation is therefore directly related to the collapse of the skin and the formation of wrinkles. Other effects of low estrogen levels, which usually occur during menopause, include graying of the skin, resulting in dryness and signs of aging in the form of wrinkles.
What processes take place in the skin at this stage of life?
the skin has less and less able to regenerate - the process of skin cell renewal is prolonged- slows down its metabolism - skin cells renew slower, and they die all the time, which results in more older cells - the proportion between young and older cells changes in favor of the latter
- defense mechanisms are weakened, susceptibility to oxidative stress increases, and thus the destructive effect of free radicals - that is why it is so important to provide the skin with antioxidants that support the skin in the fight against them
- the level of skin support fibers (collagen and elastin) decreases - the skin becomes more flaccid, less tense, loses its firmness
spots and discolorations appear, which are caused by the uneven distribution of melanocytes - cells that produce a pigment called melanin. There are also disturbances in its production - the tendency to lymph stagnation increases, which causes shadows and swelling on the face
- the level of skin hydration decreases, among others, due to the reduction of hyaluronic acid naturally present in the skin
What to pay attention to in the care of mature skin?
Certainly, mature skin requires more attention. You have to watch it and draw conclusions. Cosmetics used so far may stop working. This may be due to their too little potential (moisturizing, nourishing, or anti-aging), but also simply because the needs of our skin change (and even sometimes our skin type!). It cannot be assumed that it will continue to check what we used a few years ago - although, of course, it can happen.
The selection of cosmetics is becoming more and more important - if we focus on specifics (creams, serums) containing active ingredients, we can talk about advanced care. In the composition, pay special attention to the presence of antioxidants with a broad anti-aging effect. These include, among others, retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, plant extracts, and active ingredients with targeted action.
Regardless of active cosmetics, it is worth spending time on additional treatments, such as facial massage (we can do it ourselves), which helps to keep the skin firm.
What else is worth remembering when caring for mature skin?
- Regularly, gently cleanse the skin with preparations without aggressive detergents, which can additionally dry and irritate it.
- Let's protect against photoaging - the use of products with filters is recommended throughout the year, but it is also worth remembering about ingredients that additionally support the skin in this respect (e.g. vitamin C).
- Let's use scrubs - mature skin is prone to keratosis, which is why removing dead skin cells is so important. In addition, peeling improves blood and lymph circulation, accelerating regenerative processes. Enzymatic or fine-grained preparations will be the best choice.
- Let's take care of skin hydration - well and deeply moisturized skin regenerates faster and is less susceptible to any aging processes. It also regains smoothness and softness, and its tendency to irritation is reduced.
Morning and evening - why do the times of the day matter?
Our skin, like the rest of the body, functions in a circadian rhythm. Therefore, cosmetics used for morning and evening care should be varied. Before going to bed, the skin needs different ingredients than in the morning.
Evening and night
The night is the time when the skin is free from the challenges of the day, stress (to which our entire body is subject), and pollution and can regenerate. At the same time, processes occur in the body that supports cell renewal, and the level of hydration is balanced. The skin then draws handfuls of substances that were delivered to it in the evening. That is why this is such an important step. The best time for evening care is before 10 pm when the activity of skin cells increases. The active ingredients contained in the cosmetic will optimize this process. Around 1 am, toxins are removed from the body and the skin absorbs what has been put on it. Regeneration takes place at 2-3 in the morning when the epidermis is renewed and the body's level of hydration is balanced. Until 5 am, the cells regenerate and the body is well-oxygenated.
The perfect night cosmetic for mature skin care?
It can be a cream or serum that will nourish the skin, ensure optimal hydration and stimulate the skin to regenerate. Active anti-aging ingredients have a chance to penetrate the deepest and work most effectively at night. Therefore, it is at night that we should use the most valuable cosmetics - then the skin will benefit the most from them.
For evening care, we have created the VITAMIN TREASURE Concentrated Eye Serum with Retinol and Coenzyme Q10, which has high antioxidant potential. It is dedicated to the areas of the skin that are most susceptible to visible signs of aging - mainly around the eyes and lips, but we recommend applying it in the evening to the entire face every 2-3 days or even more often if needed. Oil serum is a great alternative to cream – you can apply it on its own or mix it with a bit of cream.
Hyaluronic acid used regularly at night will restore the level of deep skin hydration. We always use it as the first cosmetic, followed by serum or night cream.
Morning. Cleansing and stimulating.
Around 7 am, the skin wakes up to life. The first stage requires cleansing and gentle stimulation of circulation. For most complexions, toning the skin is enough to refresh the skin in the morning. After that, it's time for more cosmetics.
The perfect cosmetic for the day. What properties should it have?
Cosmetics used in the morning should have properties that improve the appearance of the skin - smoothing, brightening, and refreshing. Sometimes we expect a slightly tightening or skin-lifting effect - but it is important that they do not give a feeling of tension, but rather a slight comfort of smoothed skin, and elasticity. During the day, they must maintain a level of hydration and protection against external factors. Ideally, if they have a light consistency and work well under makeup.
For the morning, we recommend the Mango Energy Revitalizing Elixir, which provides the skin with a large dose of vitamins and nutrients. Perfect to start the day - perfect for traditional and mineral make-up. After using it, the skin gains a healthy glow and freshness, and its color is evened out. With use, the level of hydration is restored and the appearance of the skin improves. The elixir contains, among others, the active ingredient - Glyceryl Glucoside. It accelerates the metabolism of skin cells - and therefore has a rejuvenating effect on them. On it, we can apply your favorite cream or - which we highly recommend - Youth Glow anti-aging serum. The serum will provide elasticity and beautiful color. It harmonizes nicely with Elixir, complementing its action.
If the problem of mature skin is excessive oiliness and shine, often combined with enlarged pores, we recommend paying attention to the Perfect Day Light Normalizing Serum. It is a highly moisturizing cosmetic while limiting excessive shine during the day. It can be applied under cream or oil.
Care of mature skin requires a conscious choice of cosmetics. Through the active ingredients contained in them, we provide it with what it needs and stimulate regeneration processes. It is worth reaching for high-quality products with a rich composition. Although cosmetics are not everything, they certainly help keep the skin healthy, in good condition and prolong its youthful appearance.
